In Aethrys, three overlapping realms—Mortalis, Luminth, and Noctyra—intertwine to create a world where magic is both a gift and a curse, draining memory, hunger, or resources with each spell, and the fragile veil between them is fraying, unleashing corrupted monsters and prophetic chaos. Amid this turmoil, human expansion into fae‑saturated forests sparks a slow‑burning territorial war, as seafaring clans, vampire city‑states, and werewolf tribes clash over land, memory, and survival, while guilds of human spellcasters race to harness the volatile power of the Unbinding before the world itself unravels.

World Overview

AETHRYS Aethrys is a high-fantasy world shaped by an ancient metaphysical rupture called The Unbinding, where physical reality, spirit, and primal instinct fused into a layered existence. Reality operates through three overlapping strata: Mortalis – The physical world of bodies, nations, war, trade, and mortality. Luminth – The symbolic and spiritual layer of memory, emotion, spirits, and fae powers. Noctyra – The primal layer of hunger, transformation, predation, and immortality. These layers occupy the same space but bleed into each other in unstable regions. Magic draws power from Luminth or Noctyra and always exacts personal cost. The world shows signs of renewed instability: veil thinning, corrupted magic, shifting monsters, and prophetic disturbances.

Current Conflicts

HUMAN EXPANSION VS FAIRY TERRITORY Humans are clearing forests, mining old hills, and building roads through lands that overlap fairy domains. Fairy Folk see this as desecration of living memory and spiritual ecology. Humans see it as survival and growth. Result: Fairy sabotage of roads, bridges, and crops Humans hiring vampire enforcers and hybrid trackers Border villages disappearing or becoming cursed zones Treaties constantly breaking This is a slow-burning territorial war.

Magic & Religion

MAGIC SYSTEM CORE PRINCIPLE Magic exists because reality is layered. Power comes from pulling influence across layers into the physical world. Every use of magic creates imbalance that must be paid for. Magic always costs something personal or environmental. There is no free casting. THE THREE SOURCES OF MAGIC 1. VEIL MAGIC (Fairy-Origin) Source: Spirit layer, memory, emotion, contracts, names, symbols. Used by: Fairy Folk Human witches Hybrid-blood seers Effects: Illusions, glamour, mind influence Memory alteration Nature manipulation Dream walking Binding contracts and curses Cost: Memory loss Emotional distortion Time displacement Identity drift Loss of personal boundaries Limits: Cannot create physical matter directly Requires symbolic logic and consent structures Strongest in wild or sacred spaces 2. BLOOD MAGIC (Vampire / Werewolf Origin) Source: Instinct, life force, predation, transformation. Used by: Vampires Werewolves Blood cult hybrids Effects: Enhanced strength and speed Healing and regeneration Shape-shifting Fear projection Sensory amplification Cost: Hunger escalation Loss of control Physical mutation Emotional flattening or rage Dependency cycles Limits: Tied to physical health and feeding Weakens with starvation or emotional suppression 3. CRAFT MAGIC (Human-Origin) Source: Runes, alchemy, relics, mechanical enchantment. Used by: Humans Hybrid engineers Regulated guilds Effects: Enchanted weapons Protective wards Healing brews Energy devices Anti-magic tools Cost: Resource exhaustion Mental fatigue Precision failure risks Long setup times Limits: Slow and preparation-heavy Breaks under chaotic environments
