World Overview

Fate Universe – World Overview The Fate universe is a modern urban fantasy setting built on hidden metaphysics, secret mage societies, and ritualized wars fought by legendary heroes summoned into the present. The core tension of the setting is the clash between ideals and reality — between mythic heroism and flawed humanity. At the foundation of the cosmology lies the Root (Akasha), the metaphysical origin and record of all existence across time and possibility. All phenomena flow from it. Magi seek to reach the Root, believing it contains ultimate knowledge and transcendence. Most practitioners use magecraft, a structured system of thaumaturgy powered by magical circuits within the body. Magecraft follows rules, formulas, and equivalent exchange; it is the imitation of mystery, not true miracle. True Magic (Sorcery) exists beyond magecraft, capable of defying natural law entirely, but only a handful of individuals in history have ever wielded it. The world is secretly governed by magical institutions. The most prominent is the Mage’s Association, headquartered in London, which preserves bloodlines, research, and secrecy. Mage families pass down magical circuits across generations. Pragmatism and research are valued above morality. Another major force is the Holy Church, whose Executors eliminate supernatural threats such as heretics and Dead Apostles (vampiric beings). The central recurring conflict is the Holy Grail War — a hidden ritual battle royale conducted in a modern city. Seven human Masters summon seven Servants: Heroic Spirits drawn from the Throne of Heroes, a timeless archive where the legends of humanity are recorded. These spirits are not the original heroes, but spiritual copies shaped by myth and collective belief. Servants manifest within specific classes: Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, or Berserker. Each class grants parameters (Strength, Agility, Endurance, Mana, Luck) and class skills. Every Servant possesses a Noble Phantasm, the crystallization of their legend into a weapon or supernatural ability of immense power. Noble Phantasms often reveal a Servant’s true identity, which is a critical tactical weakness. Masters supply magical energy (mana) to sustain their Servants. They are physically vulnerable but possess three Command Seals, absolute magical orders that compel their Servant to obey without resistance. The Grail is said to grant any wish to the winning Master-Servant pair. However, the system is often flawed, corrupted, or manipulated, leading to tragic consequences. The tone of the world is morally gray and philosophical. Heroes debate kingship, justice, sacrifice, and the worth of humanity. Legends are reinterpreted through modern lenses. Power is immense but bound by rules, contracts, and cost. Alliances are temporary, betrayals common, and victory rarely pure. The public remains unaware of these conflicts. Battles occur at night in abandoned buildings, churches, rooftops, or hidden spiritual spaces layered over the modern city. At its core, Fate is a story about belief — in ideals, in heroism, and in whether miracles are worth the price required to achieve them.

Magic & Religion

The Fate magic system centers on a ritual known as the Holy Grail War. Seven Masters—humans possessing magical circuits—summon seven Servants, Heroic Spirits recorded in the Throne of Heroes, and bind them through a formal contract. Servants manifest in one of seven classes: Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, or Berserker, each granting defined parameters (Strength, Endurance, Agility, Mana, Luck) and class skills that shape combat style and specialization. Servants are sustained by mana supplied by their Master and cannot remain manifested without it. While immensely powerful, they are not limitless; overuse of abilities or insufficient mana can cause weakening or disappearance. Each Servant wields a Noble Phantasm, the crystallization of their legend into a weapon or supernatural ability of decisive power. Masters are physically vulnerable but possess three Command Seals, magical crests that enforce absolute orders upon their Servant. A Command Seal compels obedience without resistance and can be used to force actions, prevent betrayal, or enhance a Servant’s capabilities at great cost. Magecraft itself is structured thaumaturgy: the conversion of life force (Od) through inherited magical circuits into spells governed by theory, ritual, and equivalent exchange. It cannot break natural law or perform true miracles; it is an imitation of deeper mysteries. Victory in the Grail War grants access to the Grail, said to be capable of fulfilling any wish—though the ritual is often flawed, corrupted, or tragically misused.
