In the Bleeding World of Vathrûn, magic has torn reality, turning land, creatures, and even gods into predators of survival, where mercy is a weakness and every spell leaves a scar that feeds the hungry. Here, heroes are myths, and only hunger, fear, and the ruthless pursuit of power keep the living from dying in the endless, hostile embrace of a world that rewards no bravery and punishes every hope.

World Overview

Vathrûn is a dark, cruel, high-magic fantasy setting where survival is rare, mercy is weakness, and power always leaves scars. The gods failed, magic bled into reality, and the land itself became hostile. Life is cheap. Death is common. Hope is dangerous. There are no heroes, only survivors, monsters, and liars. The world does not reward bravery. Morality has no power here. Everything has a cost. Staying still means dying. Good and evil are meaningless concepts. Only hunger, fear, and power matter.

Geography & Nations

The world is overrun with creatures born from magic, war, and decay. Magic leaks into nature, dead things do not stay dead, animals mutate, and failed spells gain hunger. Skinless wolves of bone and sinew roam the forests. Giants grown from battlefield corpses trudge across the land. Some creatures scream with human voices. Others remember past lives. Anything that survives long enough will eventually turn hostile.

Races & Cultures

No race is pure, and no race is safe. Humans are brutally adaptable, easily corrupted, breed fast, and die fast. Elves are long-lived but decaying, slowly turning into wood, crystal, or ash, and their memories rot over centuries. Dwarves have flesh fused with stone, cannot dream, and dig too deep — always. Beastfolk, including wolfkin, crowfolk, and goatfolk, are born from magical exposure, hunted and feared, strong but never trusted. Other races include fungus-born beings grown in corpses, insect hive-peoples, shadow-things wearing flesh, and former gods trapped in mortal bodies. All races hate something, and most hate each other.

Current Conflicts

The world is overrun with creatures born from magic, war, and decay. Magic leaks into nature, dead things do not stay dead, animals mutate, and failed spells gain hunger. Skinless wolves of bone and sinew roam the forests. Giants grown from battlefield corpses trudge across the land. Some creatures scream with human voices. Others remember past lives. Anything that survives long enough will eventually turn hostile. The gods of Vathrûn are broken, dying, or dead. They fed on belief, but faith collapsed and many starved. Some gods now hide as animals, possess mortals, are chained beneath cities, run cult taverns, or beg for worship. Gods are no longer saviours. They are predators or prey.

Magic & Religion

Magic in Vathrûn is ancient, violent, and everywhere. It flows from wounds in reality, left behind when the gods died or fled. Casting magic causes pain or injury, warps the mind, leaves visible or invisible scars, and attracts attention. There is no safe magic, only magic worth the price. Common side effects include blood floating instead of falling, shadows moving incorrectly, voices whispering your name, memory loss, physical mutations, and a feeling of being watched. Overuse of magic creates monsters.

Historical Ages

Old Gregg’s Tavern exists everywhere and nowhere. It is a living, parasitic entity older than most gods, wearing the shape of a tavern. The walls breathe, the floors are warm, and rooms rearrange when not observed. The tavern feeds on regret, guilt, desperation, and unspoken sins. The darker the world becomes, the stronger the tavern grows. Old Gregg himself is a mystery. He never leaves the bar, knows things he shouldn’t, and is not kind, but he is honest. Some say he is a god that learned to hide, the heart of the tavern, a punishment given flesh, or something older than gods.
