In The Endless Deep, humanity clings to survival on floating atolls while the ocean devours all land, and a whispered map tattooed on a child’s back may lead to the fabled Dryland—yet the sea itself, teeming with monstrous ruins and rare Tidewalkers, promises death or destiny to those who dare dive beneath its surface. Amid relentless Reaver raids and fractured atoll politics, the desperate hope for solid ground fuels a brutal, low‑tech struggle where every drop of fuel, every shard of old‑world metal, and every whispered legend could tip the balance between ruin and rebirth.

World Overview

A post-cataclysm world where the polar ice melted centuries ago, swallowing every continent beneath an endless ocean. Civilization clings to life on makeshift floating settlements called Atolls — scavenged fortresses of wood, rope, and salvaged metal. The world is low-tech and brutal, powered by sail, muscle, and whatever fuel raiders haven't stolen. Magic is virtually unheard of — whispered about like a myth — but something stirs in the deep ruins of the drowned world below. Most people are just trying to survive. A few dare to search for Dryland, a legendary place of soil and sky that most believe is just a fairy tale.

Geography & Nations

There is no land — only ocean in every direction. Civilization exists on three types of settlements: Atolls (large permanent floating communities, each with their own laws and culture), Drifter Vessels (lone wanderers and small crews living aboard ships), and Wrecks (half-sunken ruins used as temporary shelters or bandit lairs). Beneath the waves lie the ruins of the old world — flooded cities, highways, forests — explorable only by the brave or the desperate. The mythical Dryland is said to exist somewhere, but no confirmed map exists.

Races & Cultures

Most inhabitants are baseline humans, hardened by sun and salt. A rare few are Gillborn — humans born with subtle mutations like gills, webbed fingers, or the ability to hold breath for extraordinary lengths of time. They are distrusted and feared by most Atoll communities, but are invaluable as deep divers and scouts. Atoll communities tend to be isolationist and suspicious of outsiders. Drifters are more worldly but live by a ruthless code of self-reliance.

Current Conflicts

The Reavers — a vast pirate armada — systematically raid and destroy Atolls, stripping them of fuel, food, and people. They are organized, violent, and led by a charismatic warlord called The Admiral, who promises his followers a path to Dryland that only he knows. Atoll councils argue constantly about whether to cooperate against the Reavers or protect their own interests. Meanwhile rumors are spreading that a child exists somewhere with a tattoo on their back — a map to Dryland — and every faction wants to find her first.

Magic & Religion

Magic is extraordinarily rare — most people live and die never witnessing it. Those who can use it are called Tidewalkers, and they are treated with a mixture of awe and terror. Magic appears to be connected to the drowned world below — the deeper you dive into the ruins of the old civilization, the stronger and stranger it gets. The dominant religion worships The Deep as both a god and a grave — the ocean is seen as both destroyer and provider. Priests called Salvagers conduct rituals using recovered artefacts from the ocean floor.

Planar Influences

The drowned cities beneath the ocean act as a kind of underworld — physically accessible but deeply dangerous. Ancient ruins pulse with faint energy, and things that were buried with the old world didn't all stay dead. Divers sometimes return changed. Some don't return at all.

Historical Ages

The Age of Land (mythological, pre-flood) — remembered only through fragments: waterlogged books, corroded photographs, objects with no known purpose. The Drowning (the cataclysm itself) — oral tradition holds it happened over generations, not overnight. The Salvage Age (current) — humanity scraping survival from the wreckage of what came before.

Economy & Trade

Fuel is the most critical resource — without it, nothing moves. Soil and dirt are extraordinarily precious — a handful can be traded for significant goods. Food, clean water, rope, and metal are the everyday currencies of trade. Atolls that control fuel production or purified water hold enormous political power.

Law & Society

Each Atoll governs itself — some are democratic councils, others are run by strongmen. Drifters operate outside any law. The only universal code is the Saltpact: you don't destroy another person's vessel without cause, because everyone needs a boat. Adventurers are viewed as either invaluable or extremely dangerous, depending on the Atoll — some hire them, others turn them away at the gate.

Monsters & Villains

Mutated sea creatures — some the size of ships — prowl the deeper waters. The Reavers are the most visible human threat. But the deeper terror comes from the ruins below: things that were locked away when the world drowned, now slowly waking as divers disturb what was meant to stay buried. The Admiral of the Reavers is the primary villain — charming, brilliant, and utterly ruthless.
