In a world where spontaneous human combustion turns ordinary people into fiery monsters called Infernals, special fire brigades known as Fire Force are created to combat them. These brigades are made up of pyrokinetics—humans who can control or produce fire without becoming Infernals themselves.

The story takes place in Tokyo, in a futuristic yet quasi-religious society rebuilt after a cataclysmic event called the Great Cataclysm, which scorched much of the world. The Fire Force operates under the Holy Sol Temple, blending religion, science, and militarism. However, as the series unfolds, it becomes clear that corruption and hidden agendas run deep within the church and the governing institutions.

In Fire Force, humanity has splintered into strange heritages defined by their bond with flame. Infernals are the cursed — victims whose souls combust and bodies burn eternally. Second Generations can control fire but not create it, shaping flame like craftsmen. Third Generations are living sparks, generating and wielding fire as part of themselves. A rare few, the Adolla-Blessed, carry a divine flame tied to another world, their power edging toward godhood or madness. Between them stand ordinary humans, fragile yet steadfast, struggling to survive in a world forever on fire.

The world of Fire Force blends futurism and myth, not history and fact. Though it borrows the look of a post-industrial Tokyo — complete with churches, trains, and cityscapes — its “history” is a reconstructed myth following the Great Cataclysm, an event that wiped out much of civilization centuries ago. What people call history is really theology rewritten as record: faith filling the gaps where memory burned away. The result is a world that feels familiar yet false — a society built on ashes, believing in stories that may never have been true.

The world’s economy turns on the power of Haijima Industries and its divine engine, Amaterasu. The great core burns with an eternal flame said to be a gift from the gods, providing energy, light, and life to the empire. Haijima built its fortune around this miracle, monopolizing technology, weaponry, and research on pyrokinetics. Every home, factory, and Fire Force company depends on its power — and its secrecy. To question Haijima is to question the sun itself, for in this world, commerce and faith burn from the same flame.

Justice in this world burns as hot and unpredictable as the fires it fights. The Fire Force claims to serve righteousness — saving souls, protecting the living, and honoring the fallen — yet every brigade defines “justice” differently. Some see it as obedience to the Church, others as rebellion against it. In the end, justice is a flickering flame: noble in intent, but easily twisted by faith, pride, or power.
